How to Use IRC Chat Rooms With Pidgin
Mnemotechnics.org now has a 24-hour IRC channel where you can chat about memory techniques with other people. You can chat directly through this website, but it’s easier if you join the chatroom with an IRC program like Pidgin.
This post is a tutorial on how to login to the Mnemotechnics chat channel with a free program called Pidgin. Pidgin also lets you login to Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, Facebook Chat, Jabber, AIM, and many more at the same time.
Creating an IRC Account
Start up Pidgin, and find the “Add account” button. Use the following settings:
- Protocol: IRC
- Username: use your forum username, or create a new one
- Server: irc.mibbit.com
It should look something like the image below, but with your username instead of mine:
Add the #mnemotechnics Chatroom to Your Buddies
On your Pidgin window, find the “Buddies” menu:
Then find “Add chat”:
Add #mnemotechnics as the channel. If you want to always stay logged into the chatroom in the background, check the boxes for “Autojoin when account connects”, and “Remain in chat after window is closed”. If you want, put the text, IRC, in the “Group”, so that it’s easier to find the chatroom in your buddylist.
Your buddy list will then look something like this:
Double-click on #mnemotechnics to open the chat room.
Be aware that the chat room may open up in a background tab like in the image below:
To permanently remove the tabs, see the section on preferences, below.
Once you have the #mnemotechnics IRC channel in the foreground, it should look something like this:
Check the settings and plugins options in the menu to customize Pidgin. I like to disable the tabbed chat and show Pidgin in the system tray, as shown in the image below.
If you have any questions about using the Mnemotechnics chat, please leave a comment below. The chatroom is open 24-hours per day, and there are also scheduled online events.
