Foods for Improving Memory?

I looked around for information on food that helps to improve brain function and memory. It’s difficult to get accurate information on nutrition from the Internet.

It looks like many of the articles on diet and brain function are using the same sources. The common theme of all the articles is basically just to eat well:

Spinach

  • eggs
  • omega-3 fatty acids
  • green leafy vegetables
  • nuts and seeds
  • legumes
  • whole grains
  • berries and other fruit
  • Etc.

I went to the store and picked up some whole grain bread, blueberries, spinach, fish, and other foods frequently mentioned.

Caffeine and Memory?

I’ve been wondering whether it’s better avoid coffee. I couldn’t find much definitive information on it, so I switched to drinking tea most of the time. Tea has less caffeine then coffee. Tea also contains theanine which is something I’m going to research more later.

I like oolong tea because it has less caffeine than black tea, and tastes better to me than most green tea. Ideally, I wouldn’t take any caffeine, but it’s difficult to stop.

    • I’m a vegan and I tend to have a healthy diet. I was much more strict about it in the past (even obsessive). During my most strict times (consuming apples, raw grains, mixed vegetables and bussels sprouts, raw-never w/ any topping) and running at least 6 miles a day I never felt that sharp mentally. I always thought my brain operated best on candy bars and sugary soda.

      As for caffeine, I think it is good for you. There was a study published in the Nutrition Newsletter put out by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). This organization has a reputation for being food nazis and advocating very healthy diets. Anyway, the bottom-line was that there is all kinds of research supporting that caffeine enhances the body and mind, including warding off things like dementia, and few adverse effects (save for sleeplessness and fidgetiness).

      I read a book a few years ago that promoted the idea that caffeine is not only healthy, but a sort of wonder drug.       I am thinking of simply stopping coffee and switching to a caffeine tablet daily (morning and afternoon).

      It’s available in many health food stores.
      I think tea has less of a jittery caffeine effect than coffee. I feel better after switching…
