This is the first memory technique that I learned, and the one that introduced me to memory techniques. I’ve found that it’s easy to teach in 15 minutes, and most people enjoy learning it.

Arbitrary Actions vs. Person-Action-Object System (Part 3)

Back to the drawing board. While I work on developing a functional 2-card memory system with 2,652 images, I’m using a temporary 1-card system with 52 images.

The temporary card system uses an image of one person, animal, or object per card. It’s not a person-action-object (PAO) system.   I like the idea of flexible actions more than a rigid PAO system.

Arbitrary Actions or PAO? (Part 2)

I made some progress today on the 2-digit/single-card part of my memory system. Yesterday, I was wondering whether I should switch to a person-action-object (PAO) system for my 2-digit numbers, or stick with just a collection of characters and objects.

I started changing the images to a PAO system but wasn’t feeling inspired about it. I decided to mark each object with a suggestion for actions depending on whether it comes before or after another image.

Arbitrary Actions, or Person-Action-Object?

My memory system is based on Ben Pridmore’s but with a few modifications. The core idea is the same though: decimal digits are chunked in 3s, binaries in 10s, and cards in pairs. I also have a 2-digit system and a single-card system because I don’t think I will have my 2,652 double-card images ready by the USA Memory Championships in March.

One thing that I’m trying to figure out is whether it’s worth converting my two digit system into a person-action-object (PAO) system. I sometimes have trouble creating a wide enough variety of actions to go with my characters and objects.
